Liverpool stretched their lead at the top of the Premier League to five points with a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday, thanks to goals from Darwin Núñez and Mohamed Salah.

The Reds were buoyed by Manchester City's earlier defeat, and Núñez opened the scoring in the 20th minute after a rapid counter-attack. Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher played a crucial role in maintaining their advantage with some key saves, while Salah sealed the win in the 84th minute, racing clear to score and keep up their remarkable form under new manager Arne Slot.

Since Slot took over from Jurgen Klopp in the summer, Liverpool have won 15 of their 17 matches in all competitions. They now sit on 28 points from 11 games, with Manchester City trailing on 23 points.

Aston Villa's loss was their third of the season, leaving them in eighth place with 18 points.

Slot received a rousing reception from the Anfield crowd at full-time, as his team continues to exceed expectations in the post-Klopp era. After a relatively straightforward start to the season, Liverpool have faced tougher challenges, including a draw at Arsenal, a win against a strong Brighton & Hove Albion side, and a dominant performance against Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.

"We have some incredibly fast players on the counter-attack, and it was great to see us take advantage of that to score both goals," Slot commented. "We are pleased that with our key players have stayed fit. It's been a challenging period, and we know there will be more tough tests ahead."

Liverpool combined solid defensive work with clinical counter-attacking, creating several chances, though they only managed to score twice. Villa's corner in the 20th minute was cleared, and Virgil van Dijk launched a quick pass to Salah, who was fouled by Leon Bailey. The ball fell to Núñez, who calmly rounded Villa keeper Emiliano Martínez and slotted home from a tight angle.

Núñez had another golden chance soon after, as Liverpool broke forward again, but he fired over the bar with the goal at his mercy. Villa came close to equalizing through a header from Amadou Onana, but Kelleher made a vital save to keep it out. The Irish goalkeeper then produced a brilliant reflex save to deny Diego Carlos from close range.

Despite Villa’s strong efforts after the break, Salah’s strike in the 84th minute ended their hopes. The goal marked his eighth of the season, sealing the win for Liverpool.
